Humphrey Speaks:

An All Class Reunion to serve, connect,, and celebrate friendship for the "common good.”

The Humphrey School of Public Affairs invites all alumni for the first-ever all class reunion.  In the spirit of Hubert H. Humphrey, this event is designed to nourish the fire that originally brought you to the Humphrey School through thought, action, and conversation.

The morning begins with a service project at a local nonprofit organization in the Twin Cities, a luncheon at the Humphrey School, followed by brief dynamic presentations from Humphrey alumni to spark reflection, inspiration, and conversation.

Please RSVP by Friday, October 18, 2013.

Dean's Corner: The Excitement of Another School Year

Welcome DayOn Monday, August 26, I had the honor of greeting a new class of Humphrey School students, who were beginning an orientation week to be followed by the start of classes on Tuesday, September 3. While just over 60% of the class currently are Minnesota residents, our more than 165 entering students come from 21 states around the country. And while about half of these are in the midwest, we also have new students from Arizona, California, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Washington. Moreover, about 21% of our students are international, and join us from 20 countries in Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

I participated in a number of first-week events, and was struck by the enthusiasm of this group of new arrivals. They were greeted warmly by the Humphrey community, including several new and returning faculty members, and participated in information sessions, visits to local organizations, and public events at the School. In particular, a number of our new students attended a 50th anniversary event at the School to commemorate the 1963 March on Washington -- at which the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. Participants at our event included Vice President Walter Mondale, former Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton, and civil rights leader Josie Johnson, among others. It was a wonderful way for our new students to learn about the civil rights legacy of our School's namesake, Hubert Humphrey, and the interest and commitment to these issues within our institution.

Kind regards,

Both UMAA members and non-members are encouraged to attend. Jasmine Blanks directs children in their calls for social change in Liberia

What started with one child saying, “I’m hungry-o,” in the tradition of adding an “o” to English-language words spoken by Liberians, grew into the central theme of a play calling for social change. The Burning Barriers, Building Bridges (B4) Youth Theatre, led by Jasmine Blanks (MPP ’08), teaches young people to express themselves through the arts. On one afternoon, one child’s “I’m hungry-o” statement led to several others chanting, and then became a song about being hungry for peace, education, and change...more
