Completing Your Degree

Completing Your Certificate

What constitutes "graduation?"

The word “graduation” can have many meanings.

  • Commencement is the ceremony at which we celebrate completing your degree. It is not when you actually receive your degree. Students can participate in commencement without having completed their degree, and likewise can complete a degree without participating in commencement.
  • Degree Completion is the actual conferral of your degree, reflected on your transcript. This happens when all degree requirements have been met, including not only coursework but also internship, required paperwork, and a fully paid student account balance.

Alumni Membership Opportunity

The University of Minnesota Alumni Association will provide complimentary one-year memberships to all 2011 graduates. We will take the opportunity at GradFest to let graduates know about their free membership and the benefits they may take advantage of as a member.

In the event graduates cannot attend GradFest, they may visit our new graduate Web page at for details on their complimentary membership. Please see the attached documents for greater detail.
